 for them. The goal of the ban was to prevent plastic bags from hurting the environment.

 IV In order to prepare the Rwandan citizens for this change, the government organized

 many public talks about how the ban would help the country. People shared stories about
 damage that plastic bags had caused. “My cows died because they ate plastic bags that people

 20  had thrown away and the wind then blew onto my farm,” Sentwali Kanza shared during a
 talk. The government also showed short videos on buses and airplanes to educate travelers to   7  8
 Rwanda about the plastic bag ban.                                                                 9

 V   Following the ban wasn’t easy for the Rwandans. Companies that manufactured plastic
 bags were worried about their businesses, so the government told them to recycle plastic

 25  instead of manufacturing the bags. In addition, shoppers had to get used to new kinds of
 bags, such as cloth bags or paper bags. However, despite these challenges, people follow the

 ban, and it has really helped. Rwanda has become a very clean country, and tourism is going
 up, which is good for Rwanda’s economy. Now, travelers to Rwanda say that its capital city,
 Kigali, is one of the cleanest capital cities in the world!
