future and no profession to speak of.”

“That’s exactly why we set up the center for Jewish productivity,”
Leiby argued. “We want to teach them a profession.”

The Jewish detective was furious. He waved his clenched fists
threateningly in Leiby’s derisive face, but Leiby just totally
ignored him and turned to speak to the other men instead.

“The truth is that we didn’t come here to investigate the
productivity center,” the Jewish detective announced. “We came
to try and find out what happened to the Jewish group that left
the farm and were murdered by members of the underground.
Who was in the group?”

“I have no idea.”

The detectives looked at him accusingly.

“We’re on your side here, we only want to see justice meted out
to the murderers,” they told Leiby. “It’s your duty to help us by
telling us everything you know.”

“There was a picture of the refugees in the sugar jar on the office
table,” Leiby revealed. “When I came back here and looked for
it again, it had disappeared.”

He showed the men the way to the empty office. When they
got there, they heard the sound of an approaching car.

“We’re coming, hold on just a couple of minutes,” one of the
investigators called out of the open window. “We’ve just about
finished here.”

They looked over the office, thoroughly examining every item.
Then they photographed the room and turned to leave.

“Where are you going?”

“A week has passed since the massacre took place, and today the
tombstone-laying ceremony is to be held.”

“But tombstones are laid only after a month!” Leiby protested.
