68 Leiby – Border Smuggler
His shoes had received a nice new coat of black, and Leiby left
them as they were.
When Leiby finished getting organized, Mama and Chava
were already ready to leave. Mirushka also stood next to Yosef
by the door, her hair combed into two long braids and her doll,
as always, in her hands.
“Will we go by train?” she asked eagerly.
“Yes, in a very long train.”
The child’s eyes sparkled in anticipation, and she ran forward
enthusiastically.
Mama and Chava took one last look at the house, that had
been their shelter for such a short time, then hesitantly began
walking towards the train station.
“As long as the border is open, we have to take advantage of it,”
Leiby encouraged them. “A door that closes today may never
reopen!”
