86 Leiby – Border Smuggler

               Chapter 10

Leiby opened the door of his apartment cautiously and peered
into the stairwell. He was holding a satchel filled with classified
documents that he was to deliver to various locations that day
and clandestineness was paramount. The man standing on the
steps, dressed in a gray raincoat and peaked cap, did not arouse
his suspicions and he walked confidently down the stairs.
Casting him a glance, Leiby assumed that the stranger was an
amateur artist, as resting beside him on the floor was an easel
and paint palette, and he was attempting to draw something on
the canvas.
Leiby stepped out of the building and stopped short. Just there,
at the side of the road, was another stranger in a black raincoat
and peaked cap. All his senses screamed to him that he was
under surveillance. It was no coincidence that both men were
here – they were waiting just for him. He knew that he had to
get rid of the forged documents in his satchel right away, before
the secret agents here laid their hands on them.
Leiby strode quickly down the road, the stranger behind him.
He stopped just next to an open sewage drainage pit.
“Excuse me,” the stranger turned to Leiby. “I demand that you
show me your ID papers, immediately!”
