               Chapter 11

A new interrogator arrived from Moscow, especially for him.
Leiby heard the news from the warden who brought him
his daily ration of stale bread and greasy soup. Leiby forced
himself to swallow the bread but regularly left the soup for the
warden to enjoy, and he in return threw Leiby some tidbits of
information.

In honor of the new arrival, Leiby received a day’s respite from
his grueling interrogations. He lay unmoving on his bedbug-
swarming mattress and attempted to recoup his strength. And
sure enough, the extra hours of sleep did him good, and towards
evening he felt better than he had in days. The light coming in
from the window faded into darkness, and Leiby felt he could
not fall asleep again. He would not last much longer in the
prison; that he knew without a doubt. He had to find a way to
get out!

The door opened and the warden brought in a large pail and
laid it down in the corner.

“Where am I?” Leiby inquired.

“You’re on the third floor of a splendid hotel, encircled by a lush
garden,” the warden chuckled.
