       e o ce was in a windowless basement,and until a professional
locksmith was summoned to come and get the door open,
Stashek would be stuck inside. ey had at least until the
early morning to get themselves a safe distance away from the
    principal.

“Poor Stashek,” Sandy felt sorry for him.

“ e children here are poorer than he is,”Leiby retorted sharply.
    “We can’t take any chances!”

Leiby was rm and unyielding. He pulled a ring of keys out of
his pocket and locked the door of the corridor that led to the
o ce too. en he took Sandy’s hand and hurried with him to
    the trucks.

e children in the truck fell asleep, leaning one on another.
Sandy rested his head on the wall of the truck. He tried to lift
up a corner of the tarpaulin that covered it so that he could
peek outside at the starry sky, and received a sharp poke and

 erce, whispered admonishment from Meitek.

“Stop that immediately!”

Sandy hurriedly dropped the tarpaulin back into place. Meitek’s
furious reaction made clear to him just how dangerous their
excursion was. e whole escape was illegal, and the central
committee members had connections all over, in the highest
echelons of the ruling party. As soon as their escape was
discovered, the entire police force would be alerted, and they
were at real risk of being caught and sent back to the orphanage.
