/LIH KLVWRU\ HOVHZKHUH polyvoltine, but possibly bivoltine
in parts of the region. On Mt. Hermon, N Israel, a female
was observe laying eggs under leaves of a tiny, recently
sprouted Viola modesta next to the melting snow line (Ofir
Tomer pers. obs.). The eggs are cone-shaped with rounded
flat top and 20-24 vertical ribs, pale yellow when laid and
turn brown before hatching. In lab the eggs hatched after
4 days. L1 is 1.5 mm long, pale green with long dark hairs
sprouting from brown protrusions on the body. The head is
glossy black. When disturbed the larvae curled their body

their prolegs. The mature larva is 35 mm in length, black
with reddish-brown spines and a broken white dorsal line.
The pupa suspends from the hostplant, is 15 mm long,
brown-black with white markings and resembles a bird
dropping. The adult eclosed after seven days. Overwintering
may take place in all stages from L2 to Adult (Lafranchis et
al., 2015: 530-531; DB breeding notes).
5HFRUGHG KRVWSODQWV Mainly Violaceae - Viola modesta,
V. arvensis, V. occulta, V. odorata, V. tricolor var. [C],
but ovipositing seen also on Onobrychis spp. (Fabaceae
(Papilionaceae)) and Anchusa spp. (Boraginaceae).
