Officers Ricardo Gallegos and Szymon Hypta were working first watch in the Fourth District on Feb. 1 on South Escanaba Avenue, when they observed a parked 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo sparking from the underside of the vehicle. As the officers ap- proached the scene to investi- gate, the sparking erupted into flames, spreading to the interior of the vehicle.
Without hesitation, the officers abandoned their personal safety and gained entry to the vehicle, in which a 54-year-old man who suffers from partial paralysis and several other med- ical conditions had dozed while warming up the vehicle. Due to the officers’ quick response and decisiveness, the driver of the vehicle sustained no injuries after a dangerous incident that would have had a tragic outcome, had Gallegos and Hypta not been present.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7 presents Officers Ricardo Gallegos and Szymon Hypta with Lifesaving Awards. d
