From the moment 4th District Patrol Officer Salvador Cano connected with a ring-rattling jab, the 11th Annual Battle of the Badges Boxing (BOTB) showdown on April 15 flaunted the toughness of the city’s first responders. That the CPD scored a team victory against the CFD for the third consecutive year certainly enhanced the jubilation of the evening.
But for the entire Department and for all the Lodge 7 members, the pride filling the De La Salle Institute gym- nasium came from the way their brothers and sister took a punch, bled a little and never backed down. The FOP
logo on the back of the uniforms these officers wore was done proud with a resiliency that personifies the account- ability CPD officers and detectives feel to always keep up the good fight.
All members would do well to channel the energy and relentlessness of Officer Lydia Cruz, who elevated to score a decision against the CFD fighter who bested her two years ago when Cruz had to default after suffering a dislo- cated shoulder. Clearly, Cruz and the nine other cops on the CPD Boxing Team were a force that made no secret about the task at hand.
