Based on crowd noise alone, Officer Carmen Maldonado had a decisive edge as she entered the ring for the sixth bout of the annual Battle of the Badges boxing extravaganza between CPD and CFD in April. Her family and friends cheered loudly, and at least one relative crept up near ringside in an attempt to coax a pre-fight smile from Maldonado.
When the bell rang, Maldonado turned all that supportive energy into a rapid-fire flurry that put Chicago Firefighter Reva Acevedo on the defensive in the first round. Despite a shorter reach, Maldonado landed a series of lefts and rights in the sec- ond round that put Acevedo on the ropes as chants of “CPD, CPD” rose from the stands. Acevedo mounted a strong come- back in the third and final round, firing back in relentless fash- ion as both she and Maldonado began to tire.
When the final bell sounded, the police fans raised their voices once again in appreciation for Maldonado’s gutsy effort. Those cheers turned to boos when the official announcement came down: a split-decision victory for Acevedo.
“I felt like I had it,” Maldonado said afterward. “I felt like I did the utmost and went above and beyond.”
