Some of the action outside the ring at the Battle of the Badges boxing event
  Carrying the fight for charity
The annual Battle of the Badges benefits several char- ities, including the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, the Chicago Fire Department Gold Badge Society, Fire Chaplains Ministry, the Firemans Widows and Childrens Assistance Fund and Ignite the Spirit – which assists Chicago first responder families in times of need with financial support regardless of hardship.
Country Financial, a main sponsor of the event, made a $25,000 donation.
Honoring Bauer
The Chicago Battle of the Badges Boxing Committee paid tribute to Commander Paul Bauer by bestowing him with its annual Hero Award. Members of Bauer’s family accepted the award and sat ringside with other Gold Star families.
Emcee Siafa Lewis from NBC5 Chicago led the crowd
– including several members who wore shirts commemo- rating Bauer – in a moment of silence before a ceremoni- al ringing of the bell completed the tribute.
The committee also presented its Sponsorship/Appreci- ation Award to Lodge 7 for its support of the event.

Chicago UFC fighter makes appearance
De La Salle Institute alum Curtis Blaydes, who currently fights in the UFC’s heavyweight division, made a special appearance to present ceremonial belts to competitors after one of the night’s bouts. Blaydes, a 2009 graduate, carries a 9-1 record and is scheduled to be in action at UFC225 in June at the United Center.
