Officers honored for running down repeat offender
n BY DAN CAMPANA
The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation’s Officers of the Month awards for April went to a pair of officers who faced a deadly threat during an investigation into a series of carjackings last year.
On Dec. 6, 2017, Officers Michael Fazy and Brandon Kirby were patrolling near 95th Street and King Drive around mid- night when they observed a pair of suspects standing near a gas station on a night when temperatures had dipped to nearly zero degrees.
The officers were aware of numerous carjackings that had recently occurred and decided to question the men as to why they were standing out in the cold. As the officers approached, one of the suspects fled on foot, with Kirby in pursuit and Fazy following closely in the squad car.
The suspect ran through yards and jumped fences in an at- tempt to avoid the officers until Fazy cut him off while heading south. Fazy exited his squad and ordered the suspect to show his hands and stop. The suspect continued to run, when Kirby observed the man with a weapon in his hand before the suspect leveled a gun and fired at Kirby.
Kirby saw the muzzle flash as the man began shooting. He hit the ground to avoid the gunfire before returning fire. The sus- pect then shot toward Fazy, who was hit in the hand and upper
left shoulder area of his protective vest. Fazy then returned fire. Additional officers responded to the scene and were able to capture the suspect. Investigators recovered two guns — a Glock .45 semiautomatic handgun with an extended clip, as well as a revolver. Prior to this incident, the suspect had convictions for unlawful use of a weapon, theft, fleeing to elude and possession
of a controlled substance.
CPMF officials said the incident serves as a reminder of the
dangers that Chicago Police Officers face each day while pa- trolling the streets. It was also noted that Fazy was awaiting the birth of his firstborn son at the time of the shooting and was able to be present when his wife gave birth in January. d
