“There are lots of times when officers don’t get recog- nized from the Department, so an award from your peers lets you know they are thinking about you, that we know you did a good job,” Harvey adds. “The reactions from the families are priceless, and it gives you the feeling to keep up the good work.”
Recognition also comes from the Department in the way of its annual valor awards, its monthly valor awards handed out at 35th Street and even a note in your mailbox from the sergeant, lieutenant or other higher-up. Carter asserts that these also serve to let officers know that their superiors aren’t just out there to write them up.
So making headlines by getting into a smoke-filled house to rescue trapped victims; transporting a baby who was a gunshot victim to the hospital because an ambu- lance couldn’t get their quickly enough; taking 30 illegal semi-automatic weapons off the street; the Domestic Vio- lence Unit hosting its annual book fair; Beat 2234’s annu- al Christmas party in which 22nd District Officers raised money for a grandmother to provide gifts to her six kids who lost their mother to a random act of violence; or the 25th District hosting a Halloween Haunted House in its community room – all real stories of the gallantry that comes with the job – Chicago police officers know the real story. They don’t need to read it to believe it and achieve it. d
