Members Only Section ‘Dimensions’ exhibit shows off
creativity of CPD of cers
n BY DAN CAMPANA
From nature to the abstract, from photography to stained glass, the artwork that turned the 20th District’s community room into a gallery proved that you can’t paint all Police Officers with a single brush.
The recent exhibit titled “Dimensions” put on dis- play the creative talents of current and former officers – many of whom have no formal training in the arts and learned on their own – who showed a variety of skills with paint, textiles, cameras and other instruments of artistic expression.
Even the gallery showed some unique flair, as the art- work appeared to float in the air.
Sean Loughran, 20th District commander and one of the artists featured, said the goal was to “highlight the multiple dimensions of Chicago Police Officers from across the city.
“The results are pretty cool. I’m amazed,” Loughran said in a department video featuring the gallery. “I think we really nailed it.”
A variety of subjects filled the frames. Some drawings and paintings included depictions of animals in the
wild, with a portrait of a bald eagle standing out among them. An abstract collage revealed a face upon closer in- spection. Crisp photography brought color and vibrancy to common pieces of police and fire equipment, while black-and-white treatments provided contrast.
Officer David Hayes, a 21-year CPD veteran, displayed his panoramic photo of the city’s skyline that showed ev- ery building with the prominent glow of its lights at night. He appreciated the deeper meaning of promoting officer artwork.
“I think it’s a great idea, showing police aren’t just one-dimensional,” he said in the video.
Added Officer Tim McDonough, who has an associate’s degree in fine arts, “[Art] is something that’s always been with me; I’ve always enjoyed creating. Something like this is nice, we’re able to showcase our talents and show there’s more to us than the uniform.”
The “limited engagement” in the 20th District could be just the beginning, according to Loughran, who said there is interest in taking the exhibit to other parts of the city.
“We are going to do this again, I believe, at multiple lo- cations,” he said. d
