15th District unveils new K-9 statue
Officers and police personnel in the 15th District have a new mascot to keep an eye on them, with the debut of its very own K-9 statue.
During a Sept. 22 dedication ceremony, members of the Austin district unveiled the artistically painted German shepherd, which now resides in the department’s lobby for all to see. The K-9s for Cops campaign, which benefits the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, placed 100 uniquely designed statues along Michi- gan Avenue throughout the summer.
Sponsors paid $2,000 each for their weatherproof fiberglass dog, which was then transformed by local artists who cre- ated a variety of special designs. Sponsors had the option to purchase their dog for $500, while several others were recently featured in a public auction.
A total of 16 K-9s raised just over $50,000 for CPMF and Paws Chicago.
As the 15th unveiled its statue, the 25th District launched an online fundraiser to purchase a K-9 of its own for display in the Grand-Central headquarters. Donations can be made by going to Classy.org and searching for “25th District K9 for Cops.”
