C M honors two of cers for handling violent confrontation
n BY DAN CAMPANA
Two officers who stopped to check on a group of men drink- ing in the street earned Chicago Police Memorial Foundation awards for their actions during the incident, which quickly es- calated into a shooting that wounded one of the officers.
Officers Michael Hudson and Patrick Forbes were working in the 6th District on June 3 as part of the Summer Mobile Patrol when they came upon the men, including one who fled into a nearby apartment building and ran up three flights of stairs.
The officers confronted the man, who reached for a gun in his waistband and wounded Hudson in the hand as they struggled. Forbes, a four-year veteran based in the 7th District, returned fire and struck the man as he continued to refuse to surrender. The man then started to fight with Forbes, causing the pair to tumble down a flight of stairs.
The man fled the building, but Forbes remained in pursuit and captured him a short distance from the apartment com- plex. The man’s weapon also was recovered at the scene. Addi- tional officers arrived on scene, with a pair rendering immedi- ate medical care to Hudson — including applying a tourniquet — whose hand was severely injured.
Despite his injury, Hudson was able to give investigators key information that led the man to be charged with attempted murder. Hudson, who joined the CPD two years ago, has under-

gone multiple surgeries on his hand.
Phil Cline, CPMF executive director, praised the officers —
both military veterans — for their handling of a dangerous situ- ation that started out as a typical ordinance violation.
“This underscores the challenges every working Chicago po- lice officer encounters while doing routine police work,” Cline said. “Officer Hudson saw combat in two tours of duty in Af- ghanistan and Iraq, only to return to Chicago and join the CPD, where he was shot while investigating what began as an ordi- nance complaint.” d
