Officer Constantino Martinez
Officer Matthew Coffey
On Oct. 31, 2018, Officers Constantino Martinez and Mat- thew Coffey were working 664A when they observed a num- ber of male subjects standing at 7909 S. Drexel, designated as a gang and narcotics hotspot. As both officers approached the subjects, one of the offenders ran from the location while holding his waist; he subsequently broke into an apartment building, with officers giving chase.
Officer Martinez had to make an emergency forced entry into the building, fearing that the offender could possibly take hostages. Upon making the forced entry, the offender point-
ed a handgun in the direction of Officer Martinez. In fear for his life, Officer Martinez discharged his firearm, striking the offender.
Felony charges were approved for unlawful use of a weapon (UUW) by a felon and aggravated assault to a peace officer. A weapon was also recovered from the convicted felon.
It is with great appreciation that Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 presents Officers Constantino Martinez and Mat- thew Coffey with Distinguished Service Awards.
