10th District officers stand together for special graduate
The St. Ignatius College Prep class of 2019 was giv- en one final lesson when students and their families exited their graduation ceremony this June to a sea of blue flashing lights and uniformed officers stand- ing strong for a fallen brother.
In the crowd of high school graduates was Benja- min Perez Jr., who was stunned by the 10th District’s efforts to support him on his big day in honor of his father, 10th District Officer Benjamin Perez, who was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 18, 2002.
In honor of his fallen brother, Officer Fernando Banda from 010 helped organize the tribute for the Perez family. Other participating officers includ- ed Dave Vazquez, Angel Mendez and Lieutenant Sheamus Mannion, who was one of Perez’s partners when a train accident caused the beloved officer to make the ultimate sacrifice.
“The Chicago police were able to attend the amaz- ing graduation and were happy to show support to our special grad,” the 10th District shared on its Twit- ter page. “May you be blessed in your journey and know that you always have our blessings.”
The 10th District officers’ presence at the gradua- tion ceremony reinforced their support for the Perez family while making a statement that, no matter how much time passes, fallen officers are never forgotten.
