Training pays off for CPMF award winners
n BY DAN CAMPANA
The initial call about an injured and bleeding boy turned into a teaching mo- ment for Field Training Officer Sergio Co- rona and his two probationary officers.
Corona explained to them — Officers Brendan Lyons and Ravyn Morgan — what they might encounter and how to handle the scene to help medics treat the youngster.
In that conversation, Lyons mentioned that he was carrying a tourniquet, some- thing that became a key factor in saving the boy’s life.
The trio shared the Chicago Police Me- morial Foundation’s (CPMF) Officer of the Month Award for July for doing just that on the night of June 2.
When Corona, Lyons and Morgan ar- rived, frantic family members flagged them down. The boy had been cut on a wire fence; puddles of blood on the side- walk and porch indicated just how serious an injury the boy had suffered.
Corona radioed dispatchers to update them on the boy’s injury, while Lyons asked the father whether blood was ooz- ing or squirting from his child’s wound. The father described it as squirting. Based on Lyons’ LEMAR training, squirting in-
dicated that the boy could have a severed artery and there was no time to waste.
The officers went to the boy and saw a large loss of blood. While Lyons applied the tourniquet to the boy’s arm to stem the blood flow, Morgan worked to calm the family and explained that more help was on the way.
At one point, the boy asked if he was go- ing to die. Morgan reassured him that he would be OK.
Corona met the medics and figured out the fastest route to Lutheran General Hos- pital, the nearest trauma center. Led by the officers, the ambulance took the boy to the hospital within minutes.
The medics and emergency depart- ment staff who treated the boy later said that he had in fact suffered arterial bleed- ing. If not for the tourniquet, the boy would have bled out, officials said.
The boy has since been released from the hospital as part of his recovery.
“We honor these officers as an exam- ple of the high caliber of officers on the street and the quality of training they are receiving at the police academy,” CPMF Executive Director Phil Cline said. “These officers took this job to make a difference. They showed us what a difference they
can make when they worked together to calm the family, treat the wound and get the boy to the hospital for more assis- tance.”
Local media also picked up on the trio’s lifesaving efforts, featuring the officers in interviews following the incident.
