With brain surgery
in her immediate past, Sharon read an email from the society that said, “this is the last possible day that you can order your certification board packet.” She thought to herself, “You know, I really am well enough. I am so sorry I haven’t done my MDA before...OK! I’m gonna do it!” She surprised even herself by tackling the Society’s Master
Decorative Artist floral portion of certification test. “I just put everything on hold and waited to get the pattern,” she reflects. “It took a whole week for the pattern to get here. I only had five weeks to paint the board once I got the pattern in my hot little hand. I had already looked at the designs on the computer and had printed them out. I wasn’t even a member of the Society for a long time because I couldn’t afford it,” she says.
While painting her certification board she discovered, “I haven’t lost my ability.” Recalling the moment, she says, “I felt like I was going to recover, and things were going to be OK,” though she admits having to take more breaks now. Streaming the Society’s 2017 Facebook certification award ceremony while sitting at her Las Vegas, Nevada, dining room table drinking coffee, Sharon watched Sue Pruett announce all the names of the passing entrants. Her name was the last one called.
Nearly three years since regaining consciousness in her hot car after a brain seizure, Sharon expresses, “All in all I
am so lucky and grateful for everything, from waking up after the successful surgery.” Her heart is full of gratitude for all the people who played a part in her recovery. She says, “Let us not forget the true strength of my friendships; each and every one of my painting friends in their own way helped me to recover by word, deed, prayer, or paint. I am grateful beyond words.” At the time of this writing, Sharon is gearing up to submit the remaining still-life portion of her MDA certification test.
Sharon is obviously a model for overcoming adversity. Her story also illustrates the healing power of artistic endeavor. Ultimately, however, Sharon’s story teaches how people connect to create something even more beautiful than art: Life. The Society sparked Sharon’s desire to strive with paint–through an email. Someone sent that email. Who? That person, doing their part, helped Sharon recover her “crazy.” As a member of The Society of Decorative Painters, we can each contribute to this beautiful picture we call Life.
