SOURCES
This process was taught to me by artist Kathy George.
I use melted paraffin wax and Ginwashi rice paper with watercolor paints. The paraffin wax is used to protect the white and light colors on the rice paper, building up layers of paint and wax until all of the rice paper is covered. After finishing this process, you iron the wax off with an iron between layers of newspaper. What is so wonderful about this technique is you never know how your painting will turn out. The ending will surprise you at how beautiful your painting is.
PREPARATION
Do not cut the Ginwashi paper; you want to tear it so you will have an uneven edge. Just draw a line of water onto the paper and then tear. It will tear very easily. The wax will go through the rice paper, so place your rice paper on a piece of waxed paper and then both on a piece of freezer paper to protect the surface or table you are painting on.
TRANSFERRING DESIGN
Place design under the Ginwashi rice paper and trace the design onto the smooth side of the rice paper with the .03 ink pen. Fill in the dragonfly’s body going around the little dots on the body and the top part of the wings. Use the .01 ink pen very lightly to draw the little lines in the wings. Note: always pick the pen up when you stop drawing because the paper will keep absorbing the ink.
Go ahead and sign your painting. It is easier to sign it before the painting and waxing process.
