LET’S PAINT
One important thing to keep in mind is that the rice paper has no sizing, so the paint will run and sometimes you will have hard edges. Just take clean water on your brush and soften the edges; it is OK for the color to go outside the lines, but you do not want any hard lines. Paint the little dots on the body with colors of your choice. Use little water with the paint so the colors will be bright. Once the dots are dry, wax the wings and the body of the dragonfly. Splatter the background with wax.
Mix light value Cobalt Blue and paint over the entire background, then dry.
Splatter the background again and paint over with a medium value Cobalt Blue.
While the background is still wet place a little Ultramarine Blue around the edges.
DRY – now go back and wax the entire painting.
FINISHING
After you have painted and waxed the entire painting, separate it from the wax paper and crumble it into a ball. That’s right – this process will give the painting a very interesting look. Spread out the paper, but do not take off any loose wax. Now go back with a 3⁄4" flat brush and randomly LAY any dark colors from your palette. The paint will bead up. While the paint is still wet, wax it one more time by laying the wax on the wet paint – do not brush back and forth.
Once the wax is cool, you will iron it off between layers of newspaper. Start with four layers of paper and then three and so on until you see no evidence of wax on the newspaper.
After all the wax is ironed off you can go back and darken or highlight any areas that you want to with watercolor paint or pastel pencils. Note: Remember that the rice paper is very fragile when wet, so be careful when touching up.
Float your painting on a white acid-free matboard or foam board with double-sided tape. Now, stand back and look at your painting. If you are satisfied, you are finished.
