Last year I had the opportunity to visit the well-known art colony of Kovaccia, Serbia. This elite group of artists began
in the ’50s when residents, with no formal training, began depicting the daily life around them with canvas painting. With no perspective or realism and using fresh, pure colors, the simple style caught on. It’s sophisticated in its own way, with simple repeated designs and color repetition. It is collected all over the world and today the village hosts a museum and shops as the new generation continues producing paintings in what is aptly labeled the Naïve Art Movement.
I use my treasure box to keep my tubes of paint and good brushes. I designed and painted it celebrating their simple style and wonderful use of color, and especially to remember my trip to this very special place. You can find more information about the village and its artist inhabitants on Google.
PREPARATION
Sand inside and out. Seal the outside of the box with DecoArt Americana Sealer/Finisher Spray.
Thin the DecoArt Americana Oak Gel Stain. Use the largest brush to stain the inside. While it’s wet, sideload the large brush with Traditional Burnt Umber and float this around the bottom and top to antique.
Paint the edge of the lid with True Red and the rest of the outside with Lamp (Ebony) Black.
Transfer the basic patterns. Do circles for the round daisies on the lid’s edge and inside the lid.
