Hint: On a dark surface, it’s often a good idea to undercoat with a middle value gray.
INSIDE
Spatter with Traditional Burnt Umber.
Basecoats
Detail: Use thinned paint for fine lines. A stylus creates tiny dots. The end of brush handle makes the larger dots.
With Prudy’s Best Liner brush, paint the stems and leaves that come out of the top of the tulips. The yellow flowers are brush tip dots of Cadmium Yellow. When dry, dot each one with a stylus dot of Snow (Titanium) White.
YELLOW ROUND FLOWERS
At the top of each is a brush tip dot of True Red.
Snow (Titanium) White stylus dots encircle each flower.
LEAVES
All veins and outlines on the leaves are done with a liner brush using thinned Snow (Titanium) White.
Use Prudy’s Best Liner brush to make small s-strokes around each circle (see photo).
The white daisies, leaves, and comma-strokes on the lid are done with thinned Snow (Titanium) White. Use the no. 8 Cat’s Tongue brush. A stylus makes the accent white dots.
The tulip stems on the lid have True Blue accent dots down each one, done with a brush tip.
Using slightly thinned Traditional Burnt Umber, paint the inside lid’s design. Use a liner brush for the lines, the appropriate size cat’s tongue brushes for the comma- strokes and leaf strokes, and a small brush tip for the dots around the center.
OUTSIDE
Using slightly thinned Snow (Titanium) White on the script liner brush, paint the double circles around the flowers.
Basecoats using the appropriate size brush:
True Red – tulips
Sour Apple – tulip leaves, stems, side stripes of round flowers’ leaves
Snow (Titanium) White – undercoat the round flowers Cadmium Yellow – top coat of round flowers
True Blue – centers of leaves
TULIPS
Use the liner brush and thinned Snow (Titanium) White to paint the stripes at the top of the petals. The dots that line the centers of these stripes are done with a stylus, using Snow (Titanium) White.
