PREP YOUR GOURD
If you order washed gourds there is no prep work;
just wash it with a damp paper towel to clean it up from shipping. If the gourd is moldy, wash it in hot water and scrub the mold off, then dry and wipe the gourd with water and a very small amount of bleach, then dry again.
CUTTING THE GOURD AND TRACING ON THE PATTERN
For this project you can use a canteen gourd, birdhouse gourd, or a round body gourd. What you are looking for is a gourd that has a round bulb bottom section. The round body gourd is perfect because it will allow the dragonfly to be cut with one of its wings above the top of the cut gourd.
To cut the gourd you will need a jigsaw. Make sure you wear eye protection and a mask while you cut and sand your gourd. The one used for this project was a Proxxon – Super Jig Saw STS/E from Welburn Gourd Farms. Start by drawing a line around the circumference of
the gourd about 1/3 down from the top, then trace the largest dragonfly pattern onto the gourd with the left wing traced above this line and the right wing below the line (please refer to the pattern for placement). The clear vinyl recommended in the supply list is flexible, so it will lie on the gourd snugly and make it easier to trace an accurate pattern onto the gourd.
