Now cut along this line using a jigsaw going around the dragonfly wings that extend above the circumference line but do not cut the part of the dragonfly that falls below
the line. Clean out the inside of your gourd, sand the inside, and then seal the inside with DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer. It is easiest to use a mop brush for this.
This pattern will also work well on an uncut gourd. Paint the whole gourd and omit
the circumference line and add additional painted dragonflies here and there. It will still look lovely.
STEP 1
LET’S PAINT
STEP 2
Have fun with this and remember we will be using several layers of paint in the process.
Step 1: Stencil Carbon Black and True Silver dragonflies here and there, slip-slap a little True Silver here and there and let dry.
Step 2: Thin Ultramarine Blue paint with water to a wash consistency, about 2:1, and paint the entire bottom portion of the gourd – work quickly and do not let this dry. Spritz the bottom with alcohol and then drop or spatter some more alcohol here and there. Embrace the drips – you will like them later. Do not overwork. The alcohol and paint do not mix and will form interesting shapes. Please note that spritzing alcohol onto a painted surface only works if the paint is still wet – if the paint has dried this will
not happen.
Paint around the sides of the gourd with the same mix and do not let it dry. Spritz with alcohol and then drop or spatter some more alcohol here and there. Again embrace the randomness of the wet paint and alcohol but do not overwork. What looks like a mistake now most likely will look great under the other layers. Dry well before continuing.
STEP 3
Step 3: For this step you will be applying a
slightly darker wash over the first layer to add more interest and depth. Wash over the first layer with a mixture of Ultramarine Blue+Deep Midnight Blue (1:2), then water down this mixture – paint to water 2:1. Apply this wash over the entire bottom portion of the gourd and do not let it dry. Spritz the bottom with alcohol and then drop or spatter some alcohol here and there. Embrace the drips – you will like them later. Paint around the sides of the gourd and do not let this dry before spritzing with alcohol and then dropping or spattering some alcohol here and there. Again, embrace the randomness of the wet paint and alcohol. Dry well before continuing.
