14 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 1, 2015
In this design, acrylics are used for basecoating and for de- tailing the colored pencil work. Colored pencils are used for shading and for adding some of the linework. This project
is a great introduction to both mediums. It’s also perfect for the colored pencil enthusiast who wants to add a unique twist to the colored pencil experience.
PREPARATION
Basecoat the frame and insert with at least two coats of Burnt Umber/Sealer Mix, letting dry between coats. Lightly sand with fine sandpaper to remove any bumps or ridges. Touch up the basecoat with a thin coat of the Burnt Umber/ Sealer Mix. Let dry completely.
Trace the design, then center the tracing over the oval in- sert. Lightly transfer the main lines with white graphite paper and a stylus. Use a clear ruler to add the stripes on the vase. Transfer the checkered design and small stripes by moving the design and repeating it around the frame.
With Moss Green, basecoat the green leaves using the round brush and line the stems using the short liner. With Wild Rose, basecoat all the red areas (bird’s wing, red tulip petals, red sections of round flowers, red striped pattern on vase, berries, and red checkers around frame). With Mari- gold, basecoat the yellow areas (bird’s chest, beak, and top feathers, fan flower petals, yellow sections of round flowers, center of blue flowers, yellow striped pattern on vase, yellow areas on tulips, and yellow stripes on checker design around frame). With Aqua, basecoat the blue areas (head, tail feath- ers, and feet of partridge, blue flower petals on tulips and blue flowers, center of fan flowers, blue banding around vase, and blue stripes around frame).
