    PREPARATION
Using a pencil or pen and an appropriately sized piece of tracing paper, create a line drawing (pattern) of the photo- graph. If the photograph contains an element that you don’t want to include in your piece (a stray branch, for example), you can simply leave it out. Use solid lines for the pattern’s main lines, and dashes or dots for shadows.
CHOOSING COLORS
If you do not want to use the colors I used, you can choose your own. To choose mine, I used the Ultimate 3 in 1 Color Tool. This handy tool makes color choosing and mixing very simple! The tool shows you quickly and easily how to create an array of different colors from any given color.
You now have a pattern and have chosen your colors. You’re ready to begin!
Using the 3⁄4" oval wash, basecoat the surface (the floor of the oval tray) with Vanilla. Allow this to dry completely, and then lightly sand it. Remove any sanding debris, and then transfer the pattern.
LET’S PAINT
Setting up the palette in an order that is convenient will make painting a snap. My palette is organized as follows: Flesh is at eleven o’clock, Quinacridone Gold at one o’clock, Burnt Sienna at three o’clock, Burnt Umber at five o’clock, and Titanium White at seven o’clock.
