SDP SUPPORT FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE
GREAT EAST JAPAN EARTHQUAKE
— Acrylic Painting Bee of Osaka / Nagoya, Japan
On March 11, 2011 an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 occurred off the Pacific coast of Japan. The devastation left around 2,000 people dead
or missing and leveled 130,000 houses and severely damaged 26,000 more. It was the most powerful earthquake ever to be recorded to have hit Japan and is the fourth most powerful earthquake in the world since 1900. This earthquake is referred to in Japan as the Great East Japan Earthquake. Three and a half years have passed since the earthquake. Many victims are still trying to rebuild their lives while living in temporary housing.
A member of the Acrylic Painting Bee Chapter of Osaka/ Nagoya, Japan visited one of the temporary housing units in Oshima,
Kesennuma City. The victims there were looking for things to do in their leisure time. The Chapter generously donated paints, books, palettes,
and other miscellaneous art supplies to the victims. In the wake of this donation, the chapter will continue to support those who are still suffering in some small ways in the future.
A THREE DAY SEMINAR USING
THREE DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES
Chattahoochee Decorative Artists / Chattahoochee, Florida
The Chattahoochee Decorative Artists (CDA) chapter had the fortunate opportunity to learn from Janice Miller, a very talented artist and teacher, during their September 3-day Seminar. On the first day, the group learned how to paint a rooster on canvas utilizing acrylics, bubble wrap, stencils, Magic Mix, extender and “Jan Tangle”. The next day they painted on a porcelain plate using an extender and Magic Mix. The last day the group painted a Tangle Owl on a tote or shirt using special pens and fabric paint creating a permanent fabric design. The 3-day Seminar allowed the group to explore new techniques on different surfaces they weren’t accustom to. The result was a fun and amazing experience.
A THREE DAY SEMINAR USING
THREE DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES
Hudson Valley Decorative Tole Painters (HVTP)/ New York
In the early 2014, Bonnie Koop brought to the HVTDP membership the idea of painting Christmas ornaments for veterans at the Montrose VA Hospital in New York and attend the annual holiday luncheon put on by the Leo Laders American Legion Post 130.
The membership immediately agreed to the community service project and by Novemberthey had painted 135 paper mache ornaments, far surpassing their goals of 65. Bonnie attended and participated in the luncheon. She reported — “It was heartwarming to see the men and women from Montrose VA Hospital leave the luncheon laughing with grins from ear- to-ear as they gently held their ornaments for the return trip
to their residence.” The members of Leo Laders Post were also delighted to have their tree beautifully decorated with the hand painted ornaments.
