per towel until there is just a scant amount of gold pigment left in the brush. With light pres- sure brush the tip of the brush against the dark red areas. Move the brush in several directions (small circles, up and down, back and forth) so as to deposit the gold. Do this gradually, pick- ing up more gold as needed. I dry-brushed quite heavily but you can still see some of the dark red peeking through.
Paint the lines and little sit-down strokes on the lid with the Dark Red Mix. Dry and then come back with True Gold and paint over the Dark Red lines and sit-downs.
ACCESSORY STROKES AND FINISHING
Accessory strokes are made with the round brush and Yellow Oxide and Dark Red Mix.
Dry all thoroughly and remove any graphite lines still visible. Apply two coats of DecoArt Tra- ditions Satin Varnish.

About 35 years ago
Susan Abdella mda and her
husband, Doug, moved to
Redlands, Calif., and start-
ed their family. At the same
time, she initiated a new
hobby: painting. This was
a period in time when dec-
orative painting was in its infancy. Susan was one of six students who met and painted weekly in the home of her first teacher, JoSonja Jansen. Susan says, “This was so exciting, so important, and so unbelievable that I, who never studied or had any lesson in art, could actually paint!”
This was the beginning of her artist career. Susan joined the Society of Decorative Painters in 1975 and with the support of her husband and four children, her hobby evolved into pub- lishing 15 books, painting packets, and writ- ing lessons for several painting magazines. Susan began teaching locally and throughout the U.S. in 1980, and then internationally with seminars in Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Holland, and Sweden.
About 10 years ago she and four other teachers joined together and formed a suc- cessful online painting school: Art Apprentice Online (www.artapprenticeonline). You may contact Susan at sadezigns@aol.com.
