COLOR MIXES
Pink Rose: Naphthol Red Light+Yellow Oxide+ Opaque White (2:1:1)
Soft Yellow: Opaque White+Yellow Oxide+ Hansa Yellow Medium (1:tch:tch)
BASECOATING THE ROSES
Use the filbert brush and water to basecoat the rose balls and leaves.
Coral Roses: Vermilion
Red Roses: Naphthol Red
Yellow Roses: Yellow Deep Leaves: Sap Green
SHADING
Using Extender or water, sideload an angle or filbert brush with Red Violet and indicate the well of the rose. Use the same brush to load and add shade to the lower portion of the rose ball.
Again, use a sideloaded brush and shade the leaves with Red Violet.
OVER-STROKING THE ROSES
Apply a very thin coat of Extender to the surface. Re-basecoat the rose ball and renew the shading with Red Violet.
Using a no. 4 round brush dressed with Extender, lightly blot the heel of the bristles against a paper towel to remove excess. Load the brush into rose basecoat color and side- stroke into a lighter value. Begin at the back of the ball with smaller comma-strokes.
Continue stroking around the well of the rose and then the full body of the ball. Apply pressure on the brush so that the strokes will be a little larger. Dry.
Over-stroke any strokes to make them more pro- nounced if needed. If shading needs to be renewed, do so. Dry.
Sideload the brush with small amount of Soft Yellow Mix, highlight a few of the strokes in the center area of the ball.
Dress the round or filbert brush with Extender, side- load into Light Violet and add one or two semi-transpar- ent strokes at the base of the ball. Centers: with the tip of the angle or round brush touch into Red Violet and lightly stipple in a few stamen. Don’t clean the brush; pick up a little Yellow Oxide and stipple in a few more, and finally pick up some Soft Yellow Mix and stipple just a few for highlight.
SUGGESTIONS FOR OVER-STROKING THE ROSES
Apply a light coat of Extender to the rose ball and light- ly re-basecoat with the same color; renew the shading with Red Violet. While the ball is still wet, over-stroke using a round brush dressed with Extender.
YELLOW ROSE: Dress brush with Yellow Deep then pick up a touch of Yellow Oxide and begin the strokes around the well or throat of the rose. Pick up Soft Yellow Mix and continue over-stroking.
CORAL ROSE: Dress brush with Vermilion then pick up a touch of Yellow Oxide and Soft Yellow Mix. I added a few semitransparent over-strokes of Vermilion near the base of the rose for additional color.
RED ROSE: Naphthol Red+Yellow Oxide+Soft Yellow Mix (1:tch:tch)
PINK ROSE: Pink Rose Mix +Yellow Oxide+Soft Yellow Mix
DAISIES
Paint in a small oval with Light Violet.
While wet and using the round brush, stroke in the petals with Soft Yellow Mix beginning from the outside, in toward the center.
Add the centers with Vermilion and with the tip of the round brush, highlight with a few touches of Soft Yellow Mix.
LEAVES
Apply a light coat of Extender to the area. Basecoat the oval-shaped leaves with the filbert brush and Sap Green. While still wet, sideload into Red Violet and shade one side of the leaves. Dry.
Again with Extender dressed on the brush, pick up a little Sap Green then sideload into Aquamarine+Opaque White (1:tch – palette blend) and stroke the opposite side of the leaves. Use your liner brush to indicate the veins with Aquamarine+Opaque White+Sap Green.
TRIM AND GOLD DRY-BRUSHING
Use a compass and measure off 1⁄2 inch around the top of the lid. Paint this area with the Green Mix and dry. Use pencil or chalk and divide this area into halves, quarters, etc. Lines are approximately 1⁄2 inch apart.
DRY-BRUSH TECHNIQUE
Using the dome brush, pick up some True Gold on the tip of the bristles and then rub the bristles against a pa-
