BACKGROUND 1
Read all instructions before beginning. Refer closely to the Background Map on page 105 as you work. No- tice that this map is broken down into Background 1 (the upper portion of the map) and Background 2 (the lower portion). Unless otherwise noted, allow each step to dry before moving on to the next.
Using the 3⁄4" flat, basecoat the outer area of the surface with Dark. Follow with Medium just inside the Dark area. Using the flat brush and a cross-hatching motion, blend the two colors together where they meet. Then follow with Low Light in the more central area of the painting inside the Medium area. Blend the two colors together where they meet, using the flat and a cross-hatch motion. Hint: If more paint is needed as you blend, simply pinch the bris- tles of the brush together. Do not use excessive amounts of additional paint.
BACKGROUND 2
Refer closely to the Background Map on page 105 as you work. Using a large flat, apply Dark to the areas indi- cated by the slanted lines (///). Pay attention to the sizes of each area. The circles—which will later become the candle glows—are different sizes.
Basecoat the areas just inside the Dark areas with Me- dium. While the paint is still wet, blend the colors where they meet.
Basecoat the circle areas with either Low Light or Light, as indicted on the Background Map. While the paint is still wet blend where the colors meet.
Assess the background to make sure that the light areas are light enough and the shadow areas are dark enough. Make sure that all areas are sufficiently blended and softened.
Hint: Throughout the entire project, be sure to re- move excess paint from the brush as you blend with a kneadable eraser.
Transfer design. Refer to the Value Chart on page 106 for placement.
LET’S PAINT
Unless a specific brush is identified, use whichever brush you are most comfortable with for the area. Refer to the Value Chart on page 106 to determine placement of the color mixes.
Begin by basecoating the antlers, sleigh, and harness (indicated with cross-hatch marks on the Value Chart) with DecoArt Craft Twinkles. While the Twinkles are wet,
