BACKGROUND MAP
OIL
apply the DecoArt Glamour Dust. Allow this to dry com- pletely. Repeat both steps until the desired look is achieved.
CANDLES
Use the Yellow Candle mixes. Refer to the Value Chart on page 106 for placement. Using the brush you are most comfortable with, basecoat the area indicated by the slant- ed lines (///) with Dark. Basecoat the areas indicated with M with Medium. While this is wet, use a mop to blend where the colors meet.
Using Light+Medium, basecoat the areas indicated with LL. Basecoat the areas that bear Xs on the tree- shaped candle with Light, but the corners behind these areas are Dark.
Create the glow of the candles’ edges with Highlight.
WICKS
Use the no. 5/0 liner to basecoat the unburned bottoms of the wicks with Background Highlight+Warm White. Basecoat the burnt parts with Background Low Dark. The unburned and burnt areas should flow from one to an- other, so thoroughly blend to make sure there is not a hard line separating the two.
FLAME
Use the Yellow Candle mixes. Basecoat the round glow that encircles the flames with Light+Medium+Winsor & Newton Blending & Glazing Medium (1:1:tch). While still wet, blend and soften with a mop.
Basecoat the flames with Light. Use a mop to blend and soften. The wicks should show through.
Give the flames a warmer look by applying a nearly transparent coat of Medium+Light+Winsor & Newton Blending & Glazing Medium (1:1:tch). To strengthen the edges of the flames on the candles in the foreground, out- line with Highlight+Warm White.
CRYSTAL REINDEER AND SLEIGH
Use Background mixes for the sleigh. Refer to Sleigh Step-by-Step on page 102 as you work. For the following steps, use a cornerload technique on the 3⁄4" flat. Wipe ex- cess paint on the palette with a sideload technique to dis- tribute paint through the brush.
Basecoat the dark opaque areas with Low Dark. Base- coat the dark translucent areas with Dark. The remain- ing less dark areas are the background showing through. While wet, use a mop to blend. Make sure to control the
