“Fair-minded, hardworking, modest, loyal, good-natured, generous, reliable, and trustworthy” are just a few of the adjectives used to describe Nancy Genetti, this year’s recipient of SDP’s Silver Palette. A member for thirty-five years, Nancy has never been one
to sit idly by while there is Society business to be done. Whether it is for a chapter or for the headquarters, she has consistently been there for the members and organization.
There is hardly a position that Nancy has not held on both the chapter and the international headquarters level. Nancy served the Society as president for two consecutive terms in 2009–10, and again in 2010–11. Prior to that she served as a board member-at-large and as vice president/ president-elect. In addition, she has served as chair of the Chapters Committee, chair of the Education Committee, and on numerous other committees including Business, Foundation, Membership Task Force, Website Task Force, and class selection. She has been an active participant in most, if not all, of the Society’s special programs, including

What can you say about a
painter who spends most of her birthdays donating her time to the SDP Certification judging process? If your answer is dedicated—you just described this year’s award recipient.
Sue has been a member of the Society since 1980, and
passed her Master Decorative Artist in 1994. Since then, she has served as a Certification judge, clerk, and standards judge more times than she can count. For 2014, Sue takes over the chair of the Certifications Committee.
Former Certification Chair Dianne Crowther mda states, “Sue is 100 percent behind the SDP and its goals for the future.” This year alone, Sue volunteered to receive the Certification boards for judging. This requires time
to receive, mark, number, and record all the submitted boards; plus transporting them to the judging venue. She also served as a judge during the process.

outstanding levels of spirit and a desire to share decorative painting with the world.
both White House projects, as well as the Smithsonian, Library of Congress, and Blair House projects.
As Janice Henricks wrote, “It is not enough to nominate someone simply because she has held many positions ... Nancy’s gift is far more than just a name attached to a job description. Nancy has consistently provided SDP and chapter members with a quiet example of dedicated service.”
“I am so honored and excited,” exclaimed Nancy. “This is a dream come true! Since seeing the Silver Palette Award presented at my first Conference more than thirty- five years ago, and especially when my dear friend Helen Roberts received it, I, too, wanted to earn this award. It makes all the years of hard work and dedication to SDP, chapters, and decorative painting worth it. I want to thank those that nominated me, those that chose me, and everyone that worked with me to promote SDP.”
Nancy is a proud member of the Wildflowers of Texoma chapter, a DecoArt Helping Artist, and a member of IDAL. She also teaches nationally and internationally to help students further their studies, improve their knowledge, and develop their skills in decorative painting. In 2006, Nancy was recognized with the Outstanding Chapter Service Award.
In addition, Sue worked well over one hundred hours editing three new videos, which were created by the Certification Committee to take the mystery out of the Certification judging process. Never complaining, Sue cut, spliced, edited, corrected spelling, and blurred her eyes
to get it done in time for the 2014 candidates to review prior to submitting their work. These three videos— Introduction to the Judging Process, Still Life Critique Demonstration, and Stroke Critique Demonstration are available on YouTube. The information in these videos is invaluable in understanding what makes a painting work—value, intensity, form, color, and control.
Sue has taught painting for thirty-five years, and
her passion is as strong as it was the day she started painting. She is always willing to share her knowledge of painting and SDP. Sue has stated that teaching takes her to wonderful people and places around the world. The friendships along the way are an extra bonus, which feeds her passion.
