 PAINTING TIP
To keep the paint moist and easy to blend during wet-on-wet painting, keep a bit of Jo Sonja’s Retarder Medium in the brush. I also suggest that you apply a light coat of Jo Sonja’s Retarder Medium to each element before applying paint.
motivated by one of Jo Sonja Jansen mda’s de- sign classes, I wanted to create a whimsical piece that serves as a reflection of where I live. After all, Gil-
roy, Calif., is the Garlic Capital of the World. In addition, I am employed by independent bookseller BookSmart, in Morgan Hill, a town well known for its mushrooms. In- spired by these towns’ local festivals (the Gilroy Garlic Fes- tival and the Morgan Hill Mushroom Mardi Gras), I knew this design would honor these beloved traditions...and would simply be fun to paint.
PREPARATION
Seal the entire piece with Jo Sonja’s All Purpose Sealer. You also can mix the sealer with the background colors (1:1) and apply. Allow this to dry completely.
On three sides of the holder, measure up approximately 11⁄2" (3.8cm) from the top of the square base and lightly mark the spot with a pencil. Use these marks to lightly pencil in a horizontal line on the three sides. This will later serve as the checkered tablecloth. The corresponding area on the fourth side will be filled mostly by the soup pot. Refer to the photo of the finished piece.
