After completing the finished sketch, I block in the darker areas with Purple Lake. This will give you a very good per- spective on the balance of the layout.
SKY
STEP 1: Before painting the sky, you’ll need to mask off all buildings as best you can with painter’s tape. Mask the smaller detail areas with Masquepen. Using the 1" flat wash, paint the entire sky. Saturate the entire sky area with a generous coat of water. Wait a few seconds to let it soak in, and then repeat this three times. Put Country Blue, Purple Wave, and Blue Grey along with a generous amount of Pro-White on the paint tray. Apply a heavy coat of Pro- White in a diagonal pattern to the right side of the steeple. Apply Pro-White to the left side of the steeple. Wash brush and apply some splashes of Country Blue and Purple Wave. Do not get any paint inside the Pro-White areas yet. Apply one splash of Blue Grey approximately in the middle right sky area. Do not spend a lot of time doing this. You just need to get the paint on the paper.
