While missing and thinking about family at the time of considering a new project to paint, my thoughts were, “What better way to enjoy family from afar than to look at old photos and shared recipes?” I love the nostalgia of an old handwritten recipe card. We have a very large family – my grandmother who adorns the front cover of this project had 14 children. The children on the cover with her are three of my more than 65 first cousins from my family tree. Have you ever been told that leaves never fall far from the tree? The leaves for this project were gathered and traced from the little maple tree in our front yard. So leaves and favorite family recipes went together on my book. Let’s have fun painting autumn leaves and make a book for your treasured recipes!
PAINTING TIPS
n Do not seal the wood on the top cover because we need the paint to seep into the wood grain and bleed together. The leaves are painted, textured and antiqued first, then we seal. The background is painted after the leaves.
n Make a copy of your photo and cut the edges with the pa- per edgers. My photocopy is about 2 1⁄2" x 3 1⁄2" (6.35 x 8.89 cm). Do not use the original photo to découpage. Use your own judgment for the recipe. Every family has their own keepsakes; use anything that is meaningful to you. Photocopies are recommended.
Remember to reference the project photo for element placement.
