PREPARATION
The paper’s edges can be taped to a flat board or other surface to prevent it from curling or moving while you paint. Later, when the entire piece has completely dried, carefully remove the tape. Transfer the design to the water- color paper. Do not transfer the butterfly, the large dots that stem from each flower, and the diagonal stripes inside some of the squares on the checkered border. They will be transferred later.
LET’S PAINT
LEAVES
Apply a wash of Citron Green+clean water (1:1) to each leaf on the fairy’s belt, in her hair, and the flowers growing around her. Allow to dry. Apply a wash of Sour Apple to the bottom edges of the leaves, fading approximately one-third of the way in toward the center. Allow to dry. Using the 1⁄4" angle brush, shade the bottom of each leaf with Festive Green.
HAIR AND APRON
Basecoat the fairy’s hair, the apron over her purple dress, and the details on her sleeves with Primary Yellow+clean water (1:1). Shade all the edges of the yellow areas with a wash of Jack-O’-Lantern Orange. Allow to dry.
Add another layer of Jack-O’-Lantern Orange wash to the left sides of the yellow areas. Shade the left edges and the areas next to the fairy’s face with a wash of Cadmium Orange. Since this color is very strong it might be neces- sary to dilute it more than usual, layering the washes until the desired color is achieved. The sprigs of hair extending from the end of the ponytail will be added later.
Add the three-leaf details that sit in the bottom-left corner of each apron section with Cadmium Orange.
DRESS
Apply a light wash of Purple Pizzazz to the entire dress, including the sleeves. Allow to dry completely. Repeat the wash, concentrating on shading the bottom and outer edges of the sleeves and bodice, and directly beneath the yellow apron portions. Allow to dry completely. Using the 1⁄4" angular brush, repeat the shading, again along the outer edges of the sleeves, bodice, and beneath the apron sections. Do not apply the wash to the wings, which will be painted later.
FACE, NECK, AND LEGS
Using a wash of Flesh Tone, basecoat the fairy’s face, neck, and hands. Allow to dry. Using the 1⁄4" stencil brush with Boysenberry Pink, lightly dry- brush hints of color to the cheeks on the face. Using clean water+ Festive Green (1:3), basecoat the fairy’s leggings, between the stripes. Shade the edges of leggings with Hauser Dark Green. Using Boysenberry Pink, add the stripes to the leggings.
