PALmETTO PAINTERS DECORATE SuPPLY BAGS FOR ABuSED WOmEN
The Palmetto Painters chapter in Columbia, S.C., has been generously providing time and talent to local organization Sistercare, Inc. for nearly ten years. Sistercare, Inc. offers help and support to women and their children who have suffered domestic violence. Recently a donation of zippered bags fell into the chapter’s lap, and members could not resist painting them. The next step, of course, was to stuff them with useful items and send them to Sistercare, Inc.
Sistercare, Inc. is an organization that is well known in the Columbia area, according to PP’s Linda Frick, and the people served by it are in great need of what the program has to offer. Palmetto Painters chapter first began its work by auctioning handmade and hand-painted pieces of art, and then donating a percentage of the proceeds. The current idea of painting these cute bags, however, came from 2013 Chapter President Edna McClain, who works for Tri County Hospice. The bags had been donated to Hospice, but the group was unable to put them to use.
Members got together, along with their paints, brushes, ideas, and patterns, to create beautiful designs on each bag. The bags were then filled
with items such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion, notepads, pencils, and more. The chapter still has more of these bags and is considering adorning them with designs for children, filling them with supplies that they will love, and giving them to the youth helped by Sistercare, Inc.
