16 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 2, 2014
This beautiful scrolled metal stand makes a very con- venient cookbook (or iPad/tablet) holder. A painted backboard, such as the one featured in this project, makes
a wonderful countertop decoration when the stand is not holding a book. When in use, the stand holds the cook- book at an angle that allows for hands-free reading, and it keeps the book out of harm’s way while you get creative in the kitchen. I have applied a style of Bavarian folk painting known as Bauernmalerei to this board.
COLOR MIXES
Pink Mix: Rose Pink+Napthol Red Light (1:1) Colony Mix: Colony Blue+Titanium White (1:1)
PREPARATION
Basecoat all surfaces of the board (back, front, and edges) with Jo Sonja’s All Purpose Sealer+Island Sand on the 11⁄2" wash, using a slip-slap technique. Allow the piece to dry thoroughly. Next, sand it lightly with sandpaper, removing all debris with a slightly damp paper towel. Using a clean 11⁄2" wash in the same slip-slap manner, apply a coat of Island Sand to the entire surface of the board’s front.
FRONT: Measure in 11⁄4" (3.2cm) from all four edges of the board, lightly penciling in a rectangle using those param- eters. Place blue painter’s tape along the inside of the rect- angle’s lines, and then square the corners where the pieces of tape meet using an X-acto knife and a ruler. Firmly seal all edges of the tape by pressing them down with a plastic ruler
