or credit card. This will keep paint from seeping under the tape. To protect the basecoat inside the taped area, lay a piece of plastic wrap over the dry basecoat and tape it to the painter’s tape. This will be very important when you use the cardboard core with the Jo Sonja’s Kleister Medium mix.
FAUX FINISH
FRONT OF BOARD: Place a puddle of Espresso (approxi- mately the size of a half-dollar) on a clean paper plate. Us- ing a palette knife, mix twice as much Jo Sonja’s Kleister Me- dium into the puddle. As you create the faux finish, make sure the cardboard paper towel core is nearby. Load the 2" foam brush with the mixture and, working quickly, create the border by applying a thick coat on the outside of the tape. Using medium pressure, immediately roll the card- board core lengthwise from one side of the board to the other, and then again crosswise (at a 90-degree angle). Mix- ing Kleister Medium into the paint gives the appearance of a texture, while not actually creating texture. It also lends a unique crosshatching look to the piece. Second chances are possible with this technique, so evaluate the results before continuing the project. If the faux finish is too dark, with little or no Island Sand showing, add more Kleister Medium
to the mix. If it is too light, add more Espresso or simply ap- ply the mix more heavily. Assess the finish quickly, and try a second time if you feel the need. Simply brush over it with the sponge brush, add a little more mix, and roll it again. If it has already begun to dry, use a wet paper towel to remove it and then begin the second attempt. The desired look is very loose and irregular—not perfect crosshatching. When the desired look is achieved, wipe the edges to remove any excess paint. Speed the drying time with a hair dryer (the surface is dry when it’s no longer shiny) and remove the ad- hesive mask before continuing onto the back of the board. Any seepage can be cleaned up with a cotton swab moist- ened with water.
BACK OF BOARD: Coat the entire surface quickly us- ing the 2" sponge brush with Kleister Medium+Espresso (2:1). Using medium pressure, immediately roll the paper towel core from one side to the other, lengthwise. Wipe the cardboard core quickly with a paper towel to remove paint buildup, and then roll it crosswise. You will see a definite crosshatching pattern emerge. Remember, it should look loose and irregular. When finished, wipe the edges to re- move any excess paint. Dry with a hair dryer to speed the drying time.
