                                                                ACRYLIC
stroke leaves are done with the same colors using the nos. 2 and 4 rounds.
Using a double-load of Jade and Hookers Green, paint the calyces on the carnations and the upper stem on the tulip. All tiny comma-strokes on the dark background are done with Jade on the tip of the no. 2 round.
STEP 2: Create the wide leaves near the rose and the blue daisies using the tip of the no. 2 round with Titanium White to apply an over-stroke from the tip to the base on the light (top) side of each leaf. Begin the strokes just out- side the tip of the basecoat. Reload for each over-stroke. Using the no. 6/0 liner and Titanium White, add the veins. STEP 3: Using the no. 6/0 liner, create short Carbon Black strokes on the edge of the opposite half of the leaves. STEP 4: Over-stroke all other leaves with Titanium White on the no. 2 round on the leaf ’s light side, and with Carbon Black on the no. 6/0 liner on the dark side. Add Titanium White stick dots at the bases of the calyxes.
STROKED BORDER
STEP 1: Using Titanium White, add the large strokes with the no. 2 round.
STEP 2: Add small Titanium White strokes with the no. 2 round. Create the Titanium White stick dots.
Using the no. 2 round, add sets of three Titanium White comma-strokes, all three strokes curving in the same direction, here and there on the dark background. Use Espresso for those on the light background.
WORDING
The word Recipes is painted with Espresso on the no. 4 shader. Use the no. 18/0 liner to add the curly lines that extend from the ends of some of the letters and for touch- ups. Recipes can be substituted by Cookbooks, or any word of your choice, and can be created with the font of your choice. The font used for this project is called Fette Clas- sic UNZ Fraktur and is a type of old German font. A free download of the font can easily be found on the Web.
FINISHING
If you choose to antique the piece, use the product and method of your choice. Allow the antiquing to dry com- pletely. Drying generally takes at least twenty-four hours if an oil-based product is used, but follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding drying time. Next, raise highlights by lightly rubbing the white over-strokes with a dampened cotton swab; the idea is to provide highlights by selectively removing the antiquing.
Tack with a damp paper towel, and then allow the en- tire piece to dry completely.
When dry, varnish with Liberty Art Acrylic Matte Var- nish according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This varnish is created to adhere to both oil and acrylic paint and antiquing mediums.
SPATTERING
Spattering is optional.
When the first coat of varnish is dry, the piece may be spattered. Thin Espresso to an inky consistency, and then load it on a no. 6 fan brush. Practice the spattering technique on an alternate surface before applying it to your piece. Slide the loaded fan brush’s bristles across the handle of another brush or spattering tool of your choice. Any spatters that you don’t like should be quickly removed with a clean cotton swab. The previously applied coat of varnish makes this easy to do.
Allow the spattering to dry, and then apply a second coat of varnish.
When the second coat of varnish is dry, very lightly and quickly sand the surface with a piece of used wet-and-dry sandpaper. This will give the piece a very smooth finish.
Apply a final coat of varnish, allowing it to dry com- pletely.
Using 0000 steel wool, apply paste wax of your choice to the finished piece following the manufacturer’s instruc- tions. Buff the piece with a clean, soft cloth and enjoy your beautiful new recipe stand. This also makes a quick and easy gift.
