I created this piece to be taught as an introduction to mixed media. I find that when students complete their first
mixed-media project, their imaginations tend to take flight!
PREPARATION
Transfer the bird silhouette onto tracing paper, but do not apply it to the canvas.
BACKGROUND
Tear the decorative papers into various shapes and sizes, and then arrange them however you like on the canvas panel. When you are happy with the arrangement, carefully set the papers aside (maintaining their arrangement).
STEP 1: Using an old brush, cover the entire canvas panel with DecoArt Americana Matte Decou-Page. Apply Decou- Page to the back of each piece of paper and place it on the can- vas, brushing more Decou-Page over the top of each piece as you go. Do the same on all four sides of the shadow box.
STEP 2: After adhering each scrap of paper, use the edge of an old credit card or hotel room key card to smooth the pa- pers’ edges and to ensure there are no air bubbles underneath. If small gaps between the scraps of paper appear, they can be filled in later with DecoArt Paintable Texture Stucco.
