Repeat Steps 1 and 2 until the front of the canvas and the sides of the shadow box are covered with scraps of paper. STEP 3: With the palette knife, apply a thin layer of Deco Art Paintable Texture Stucco to any gaps between the scraps of paper, the points where three scraps meet, and areas in which colors need to be broken up on both the canvas panel and the four sides of the shadow box.
Allow the piece to dry completely. A hair dryer can be used to speed up drying time.
When it is dry, use scissors or the sanding block to re- move paper that extends over the edges.
Hint: Be sure to thoroughly wash out your brush be- fore continuing with the project.
ANTIQUING
STEP 1: Using the wash brush, apply a wash of thinned Traditional Burnt Umber over the entire canvas, the out- side edges of the canvas panel, and the four sides of the shadow box. This lends an antiqued look to the piece, and it unifies the various papers used on the background. Wipe off excess wash with a paper towel, and then allow the piece to dry completely.
STEP 2: With the sanding block, lightly smooth the sur- face of the canvas, the edges of the canvas panel, and the sides of the shadow box. This will create highlights on the textured areas.
FLOURISHES
Using the StazOn ink pad and the stamp you have chosen, add flourishes around the edges of the canvas and shadow box. Turning the position of the stamp, or using only various parts of it, will make your piece more interesting.
When the flourishes are dry, transfer the bird pattern.
LET’S PAINT
BIRD
STEP 1: Using the no. 6 filbert, apply a Lamp Black basecoat to the body of the bird. Next, use the no. 0 liner to paint the beak, the tips of the wings, and the tail.
STEP 2: Again using the wash brush, shade the V- shaped areas behind the bird with Traditional Burnt Umber. This will create depth and add more color to the outside edges of canvas.
STEP 3: With Lamp Black on the wash brush, deepen the perimeter of the canvas (approximately 1"[2.5cm] in) and the outer edges and corners of the shadow box, rounding the inside corners. A small amount of water on the mop brush can be used to soften the edges.
With Black Pearl on the wash brush, basecoat the can- dle cup and the entire inside of the shadow box. Basecoat the 1⁄2" (1.3cm) rim on the front and the entire back of the shadow box with Lamp Black.
TAKE FLIGHT
Using the alphabet stamps, stamp the words Take Flight onto tissue paper and then tear the words out. Apply Decou-Page to the area of the canvas onto which you will affix the words, and gently apply the tissue paper. Care- fully pat a layer of Decou-Page over the top of the words, being careful not to tear the tissue. When this is dry, apply a wash of Traditional Burnt Umber over the words.
SPATTERING
Lightly load the no. 2 bristle fan with thinned Black Pearl. Spatter the perimeter of the canvas panel and shad- ow box by tapping the handle of the bristle fan on the han- dle of another brush. Allow this to dry completely.
FINISHING
Affix the wing with Beacon’s 3-in-1 Advanced Craft Glue making sure the ruffled edge is on the correct side.
Apply two or three coats of DecoArt Americana Acrylic Sealer/Finisher (Matte) to the entire piece, allowing it to dry between coats.
Using a ruler, find the center of the back of the canvas panel by penciling straight diagonal lines from corner to corner. The intersection of these two lines is the center. Glue the top of the candle cup here.
When this is dry, apply glue to the bottom of the can- dle cup and attach the cup and canvas panel to the inside center of the shadow box. The canvas panel will appear to float inside the shadow box.
Sign your name and attach a wire for hanging, if you wish. Enjoy!
