Hydrangeas, one of my favorite flowers to paint, al- ways attract me in the flower garden, with their subtle colors and profusion of graceful blooms displayed
each year. These cut hydrangeas are a beautiful comple- ment to the vibrant, cobalt blue vase. Painting glass is such fun, as it develops a transparency and play of light through and on the surface. In this painting, I’ve combined both of these fascinating elements.
PAINTING TIPS
Painting glass is much easier than it looks. We’ll develop transparency with glazes, shades, and lights. Pull out one of your transparent colored vases or jars to study the values and glints created by your light source. It always helps to see an example.
Hydrangeas usually are most effective and beautiful with as few distinct petals as possible. Over-painting petals can quickly make your flower appear stiff and unnatural. Practice a little before painting on your canvas.
