 20 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 1, 2014
many years ago I went on a two-week tour of Europe to look at different folk art styles. When I learned that Hindeloopen was one of the places on
the itinerary, I signed up immediately, because it had been at the top of my list for a long time. I had always liked the Hindeloopen style, and I wanted to see the place where this lovely style of folk art painting originated.
The tour was conducted by Roy and Mary Ellerman from Washington state. I had a wonderful time traveling on a chartered bus full of other painters. We visited small towns and villages looking at old painted furniture and housewares used by people who lived in that area.
Most of all I loved Hindeloopen, a tranquil seaside vil- lage surrounded by canals. There was a lovely, small museum where old painted furniture, trunks, tiles, and housewares were displayed. We visited some of the artists’ shops and stu- dios. Meeting the artists was an exciting experience.
I came home inspired and began to paint several projects. This duck was one of those pieces, and it became one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy painting this piece and have as much fun doing it as I did.
