56 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 1, 2014
When I think of Norway, I think of beautiful snow. When I first decided to paint this de- sign, my goal was to paint the snowflake piece in cool blues.
I thought that would be very fitting. I chose the Rogaland style of Norwegian rosemaling to paint on the snowflake because of its balanced appearance—the balanced design is appropriate for a balanced snowflake. The snowflake can be painted along with the round box and glued to the top, or if you prefer, you could just paint the snowflake and enjoy it as a decoration during the winter months. Rosemaling is so special when the borders are added. It is almost like a picture frame. The border design on the outside of the box adds a nice accent and brings the entire piece together. Fill the box with special treats and enjoy!
PREPARATION
Sand the entire box, lid, and one side of snowflake well with medium-grit sandpaper. Wipe residue from all pieces. Apply the first coat of paint as indicated in the “Background” section. Allow to dry completely. Sand all pieces again with medium-grit sandpaper until smooth. Wipe clean.
Apply a second coat of paint. Allow to dry completely., and then sand lightly with fine-grit sandpaper. I often sand with a green kitchen scrubby to smooth the finish more. You can use a superfine sandpaper (220 grit or higher).
Spray with several coats of DecoArt Americana Acrylic Sealer/Finisher. Let dry completely.
