 72 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 1, 2014
When you imagine a desert, do you think of a dry, hot, not-too-interesting scene? Well, think again! In fact, the desert can be one of the most
beautiful and luscious landscapes. When the cacti bloom, nature applauds its grand creation; the colors from these unique flowers are just exuberant. This piece was created to entertain your guests while celebrating nature’s surprising beauty. Enjoy it.
PREPARATION
Sand the wood in the direction of the grain. Dust it with the tack cloth. Basecoat the shelf with three coats of Battleship Gray. Let it dry between each coat.
Transfer the design onto tracing paper. Position the de- sign perfectly around the cutout edge on the wood and se- cure it with tape. Place the transfer paper between the wood and the tracing paper, coated side down, and lightly transfer the design with a stylus using light pressure to avoid damag- ing the wooden surface.
