Tempera paint can be found in the children’s section of most art and craft stores. Water- color paper can also be found in most art and craft stores.
* Tempera is water-soluble, and will lift. It
is more opaque than regular transparent white watercolor. It can also be mixed with other watercolors to create an opaque watercolor, better known as gouache.
80 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 1, 2014
After twenty-five years of painting and teaching, one of the most important tips I can give any painter is to finish the painting, no matter how ugly it gets.
You always learn more from your mistakes than your suc- cesses. Painting is a teachable skill; it’s not about talent. I have taken many workshops from some wonderful art- ists over the years and they all say it’s about practice. One teacher told me, “You need to paint a thousand paintings before you understand what it’s all about.”
