This strokework design is an adaptation of one I have used many times throughout many years of painting custom antique roofing slates, which became “House Established” or “Welcome” signs, given as wedding or anniversary gifts. Those were generally done in color schemes echoing the decorator colors of the receiver’s home. For this little box, I have chosen a very limited color palette of burnt sienna and green, which becomes a variation of the complementary color scheme red and green.
When painting strokework, a good brush is essential! A brush that cannot maintain its shape, has errant hairs, is limp, or splits creates a frustrating painting experience. Do not allow that to happen to you. My hope is that you will relax, loosen your grip on the brush, put on some favorite relaxing music, and thoroughly enjoy every stroke you pull while painting this little box. The joy of painting is what it’s all about, right?
PREPARATION
Sand, seal with DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer, and sand again. Basecoat with two coats of Snow (Titanium) White. Allow to dry thoroughly between coats, sanding after each coat. Tape off a 6 1/2" square surface.
Background: Use a thinned mixture of Burnt Sienna+ water (1:1) and basecoat the square surface. While the surface is wet, dab with crumpled plastic wrap to create texture. Take care to move around the surface, turning the wrap repeatedly, to avoid setting up a pattern. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly. Transfer Pattern #1 (basic design) onto the textured surface.
